FIRST PLACE goes to MAYA, from Michigan!
Gotta dig those red boots in honor of Rage Waters, right? Maya took this picture of her little sister Rena, and she transformed her living room to look like a stage. (You could have fooled me, I thought it was a stage!) I can totally picture Crystal Waters lying on a stage during one of her dad’s rehearsals, her boots propped up on a speaker, reading and wishing Luke would come talk to her… Awesome job, Maya!
SECOND PLACE goes to EMMA from New York!
Okay, how cool is Emma for getting a Harley—a Harley!—into her picture?! Rage would be very proud. Emma also has cowboy boots and a microphone, in honor of Rage, and she even thought to include a suitcase, since Crystal lived out of a suitcase all summer. My favorite detail might be that Emma is wearing a black leather skirt just like the one Rage bought for Crystal on their first day together in Boston! Emma, I think you have a future in rock and roll!
THIRD PLACE goes to SAXON, from New Jersey!
I just adore this picture! Saxon told me she could picture Crystal spending hours reading in a hammock, and she’s so right! Saxon worked the cowboy boot theme, but she also included a few other creative details from the book. Did you spot what’s on the table beside the hammock? There’s a virgin strawberry daiquiri (Crystal’s favorite drink), a copy of Jane Eyre (a book I am sure Crystal would love), AND some hand sanitizer, ha! You know that germophobic Crystal was never very far from her hand sanitizer! Saxon, you did a fantastic job—I just love all these clever details!

The Thirteenth Summer Went On Tour!
We kicked off the book tour by giving out the first 14 books in Athens, Georgia!
You’ve heard of book tours, right? Usually, book tours mean that an author travels around the country talking about their book, but this was a whole new kind of book tour.
In December, 2010, I sent The Thirteenth Summer—the book itself—on tour! Fifty teens around the U.S. received copies of the book, but they only got to keep them for 7 days before the book had to hit the road again… Books went out to teens in San Diego, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Raleigh-Durham, Pittsburgh, New York, and all across Georgia! At the book tour launch, we also kicked off a photo contest with some awesome prizes, including the grand prize, a guitar from Daisy Rock Girl Guitars!
